Ralph has lobbied the Ministry regarding the Capilano Curve on Upper Levels Highway and worked to get the Ministry to initiate engineering studies to resolve Marine Drive-Taylor Way bottleneck.

Transportation Improvements Come to West Van – a New Bike Path

I will long remember my visit to Pat Jacobsen, CEO of Translink, to ask for her consideration of upgrades to the dangerously antiquated traffic systems at the north end of the Lions Gate Bridge and the Ironworkers’ Bridge.

Bounding from her corner office chair, she strode to a map on the wall behind me, showing various coloured roads in Vancouver Metro. “You see those roads, Ralph,” she said. “They’re coloured yellow. That means they’re the province’s problem, not mine!”

Here’s the skinny:

Contractor: Capilano Highway Services Ltd.
Contract value: $198,443

     - New ramp to connect existing cyclist path below viaduct and existing sidewalk Relocation of existing roadside
barrier to protect cyclists and pedestrians.
     - Improved cyclist path on the east side
     - New drop curb to permit cyclists to travel off the sidewalk onto the road without dismounting
     - Conversion of a steep ramp to a new pedestrian staircase
     - New lighting

Since completion of the Lions Gate Bridge Rehab Project two years ago, cyclist and pedestrian traffic has increased substantially, and the South Coast Cycling Committee in conjunction with the municipality and Bicycle Advisory Groups helped design the new access for bicycle traffic.
